It's my birthday!

It's my birthday today and two out of three kids are sick, so just one gets a cool lunch while I stay home to take care of the sick ones.

My oldest gets to celebrate and think of me at lunch time today with this rice and turkey "cupcake" with  mashed potato "frosting" with a pea on top!

Camping Trip

My oldest daughter is going on a camping trip with four other schools today, she is very excited, but nervous too! Here is a little camping lunch; rice and ground turkey, rice cheese tent and fire, broccoli. The cheese "logs" are from this new cheese from Heidi Ho Organics I found at Whole Foods, locally made right here in Portland, made from hazelnuts! Excited to see what the kids think of it.

Sunset

Since we are doing the beach and ocean theme, my son decided he wanted a night time/sunset scene for lunch, so this is what I came up with for that. I still had some blue rice so we were good to go.

Nori for the dark ocean, rice cheese sun and stars, mustard reflection and sky.

Dreaming of the beach

Such lovely warm days are upon us... and I had a couple of friends that took their young ones and escaped to the beach for the afternoon!

Spring garden

It was Mother's Day yesterday, and we had a lovely day with handmade gifts and my son making me breakfast in bed. The sun was shining, the birds chirping, the flowers blooming in abundance.

Today, I made a "Spring Garden". Rice and quinoa medley with coconut aminos, a couple of pieces of broccoli with some mini turkey pepperonis my youngest snuck into the grocery cart while we were shopping the other day!

The lunch, and some lovely flowers my girls potted for us on our doorstep.

Art

"It's just art, Mom" said my eight year old son when I asked what it was. He really wanted to make his own piece of art for lunch today.

Baby carrot, cantaloupe, a small piece of cut rice cheese, arranged on a pick, laying on a bed of rice.

Pirates

Aaarg! Me ship is sinking!

Apple boat with pirate sushi. My son then decided he wanted the pirates in their ship and added the end of the sushi roll as a shark!

May the 4th Be With You

Happy Star Wars Day!

In preparation for today's lunch, I tried to find a good Yoda image that I could make into a silhouette that would still look like Yoda. Well, I don't think I did a very good job at that...

Last night I printed out the Yoda and cut the image and the nori out with scissors, and cut some details out with the exacto knife. My son came downstairs for a bed time snack and he wondered why I was making Yoda for lunch. I said "you know how today is May the 3rd?" he said yes. I said, "well, tomorrow is May the 4th". I waited to see if he would get it on his own and I saw the little light bulb turn on. He laughed and laughed and thought that was the best thing ever. "May the 4th! May the 4th!". It was pretty funny.

This morning I made some white rice and wanted to keep it white, so I just added coconut oil and garlic salt. I placed my nori Yoda on the warm rice and it kind of shriveled up but I liked the look and that the wrinkles in his head were showing. Carrot for the light saber.

So, he doesn't really look like Yoda at all. He's a little too tall, dark and has an orange light saber.

I downloaded a Star Wars font for this note.

I guess he does look a little evil for Yoda. So really... wait, it's not Yoda at all. I'm calling this a Sith Lord. Yes, that's what I'll do.

And as my son told me this morning "Yoda is much wiser than you think he is, Mom".
